Privacy Policy

Redact is a privacy tool, so the policy is short and blunt: your photos and videos never leave your device, and we never see them.

Last updated: July 28, 2026

1Permissions We Request

Device Access

  • Photo Library (read) — to import the photos and videos you choose to edit
  • Photo Library (add) — to save your protected copy back to your library
  • Camera — optional, only if you capture a photo or video directly in the app
  • Notifications — optional, only if you turn on the reminder to cover faces before posting

These permissions are used only while you are actively importing, editing, or saving. Redact does not access your library, camera, or media in the background, and it never scans your library on its own.

2Everything Happens On Your Device

100% on-device processing

Face detection runs through Apple's on-device Vision framework, and the blur, pixelate, mosaic, bloom, and emoji effects are rendered locally with Core Image and Metal. Your media is never uploaded to any server. The app contains no networking code and works fully in airplane mode.

Your original photo or video is never modified. Redact writes a new, protected copy to your own photo library, and the original stays exactly as it was.

Drafts of your edits (which faces you selected and which effects you applied) are stored locally in the app's private sandbox so your work survives a crash. Deleting the app removes them.

3Face Detection Is Not Face Recognition

No identity, no faceprints

Redact detects where a face is in the frame so it can cover it. It does not identify anyone, does not build a faceprint or biometric template, and does not match faces against any database. The tracking IDs it uses (“Person 1”, “Person 2”) exist only for the duration of that one edit and are discarded with the draft.

No facial data of any kind is stored, transmitted, or shared.

4Information We Collect

Technical Information

  • • Device type and OS version
  • • App version and settings
  • • Crash reports and error logs

What We Do NOT Collect

  • • Your photos or videos
  • • Any facial or biometric data
  • • Your name, email, or account
  • • Your contacts or location

Redact has no account system and no login. Any technical information above is anonymous, is limited to what is needed to keep the app stable, and cannot be used to identify you.

5Purchases

Redact is free and currently has no in-app purchases and no subscriptions. Everything in the app is unlocked while it is in early access.

If that ever changes:

Any future paid option would be processed entirely by the Apple App Store. We would never receive or store your payment card details — the store would handle the transaction and only tell the app whether a purchase is active. This policy would be updated before any such option ships.

6Third-Party Services

Redact uses as few third parties as possible:

Apple App Store

  • • App distribution & updates
  • • Optional crash reporting via Apple

Apple On-Device Frameworks

  • • Vision — face detection
  • • Core Image / Metal — rendering
  • • These run locally, offline

No ad networks, no analytics SDKs:

Redact does not include advertising or third-party tracking libraries. Apple's services have their own privacy policies, which we encourage you to review.

7Data Sharing and Disclosure

Our Commitment:

We do not sell, rent, or share your personal information or your media with anyone. We could not hand over your photos or videos even if we were asked to — we never receive them in the first place.

We may disclose limited technical information only:

  • To comply with legal obligations or valid court orders
  • To protect our rights and prevent fraud or abuse
  • With service providers strictly to operate the app (anonymized)

8Your Rights and Choices

You Control

  • • Grant or revoke photos/camera access
  • • Grant or revoke notification permission
  • • Delete any draft or exported file
  • • Uninstall the app at any time

Privacy Settings

  • • Manage permissions in iOS Settings
  • • Use “Selected Photos” instead of full access
  • • Turn the daily reminder off at any time

You can revoke any permission at any time in your device's system settings. Redact needs read access to import media and add access to save your protected copy; without them the app cannot do its job.

9Children's Privacy

Redact is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. The app is often used to protect children's faces — that processing happens entirely on the parent's device and produces no data for us.

If you believe a child has provided personal information to us, please contact us so we can address it.

10Changes to This Privacy Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. Material changes will be reflected here with an updated date, and where appropriate, noted in the app.

Your continued use of Redact after changes become effective constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
